MEN GO MAKE FIRE, KILL MEAT!!

Thanks Brian for writing this post! OCTOBER 2007

Jacob had begged for a couple of years to go hunting with me, and the problem was that I wasn't really hunting any longer (sorry Dad). This year, Uncle Brady was "gimpy" due to his boating accident, but he and Dad had drawn out for an "any Bull" tag in a great area and so Jacob and I flew up to Sun Valley to help. Jacob was so excited, it was all he could talk about for weeks.

The opening morning was cold, and it a was a long steep hike that began around 4:30am. Jacob was a real trooper, despite being pretty high on his blood sugars due to a malfunctioning infusion site and later found out a malfunctioning pump. When we got to the to the spot we discovered that other hunters were camping in our spot, so we never really got as good of a spot as hoped. We did find about 6 large Bulls, but they were just to far away, and given that I was there in the Sherpa role, I was the most thankful that they were clearly not within kill and pack out range.

When we stopped at our place about a 3 mile hike up in the dark, Jacob began getting cold and tired, and so he took a nap under my coat, and on top of our pack.

An hour or so later Jacob woke up, and we had a few snacks and with the sun up he warmed up and really started enjoying the hunt. We stayed in place all day, and by evening headed back down for the truck.

Jacob came across many "cool rocks" (which are still in my car), and decided that they all needed to come home. He began by filling his pockets, then his arms, and then he attempted with no avail to hire Grandpa, Dad, and Uncle Brady as his personal rock Sherpas. With his arms and pockets full and still encountering more rocks it was interesting to see Jacob evaluate his stash and make adjustments to maintain the best collection by sacrificing some lesser rocks for new "cooler" rocks.

Back into Hailey for the evening we decided the days work called for Chapalas Mexican Food, and then hot tubbing back at Grandpas place. Jacobs favorite was the Hot Tub, he was so disappointed to have to come home the next day and not be able to go back and swim in the hot tub.

Side note from Jen: Later we will tell Jacob how lucky he was to have a airplane ride instead of driving up to Sun Valley. How nice it was that Dad and Brady put up with a 5 year old who isn't exactly careful where he puts his feet to jump while in hot tubs.

My liberal gun control friends are a bit freaked out by the thought of my 5 year old son handling my Kimber .45 cal., so of course I emailed them pictures, but it's all good!!

Kelsey typed that message all by herself! She is so funny. She had a shy grin on her face the entire time!
Cool post, good stories. Sounds like a super trip, and yes, if only Jacob knew how very nice it was to FLY up there!
I loved the pictures and the sherpa comments. There is something about wearing orange and being out there in the fall, that is for sure.

What good memories Brian is making! Someone once told me, "There is nothing more attractive than seeing your husband become a Dad." There is just something about Men when they are around their kids...their hearts are softened and you see a different side of them. I bet Jacob loved that trip and with these pictures he will always remember it.
