Top of Capitoline Hill "Piazza del Campidoglio"

Next we walked the "cordonata" to the top of Capitoline hill. The existing design of the Piazza del Campidoglio and the surrounding buildings located at the top of Capitoline hill, was created by artist and architect Michelangelo in 1536–1546.

BTW: The more I learn about Michelangelo the more I am amazed.

I don't have a picture but next to the cordonata is an older and much steeper stairs leading to the Basilica Aracoeli, luckily we came down the steep stairs from the Basilica di Maria Aracoeli and up the cordonata!Michelangelo devised a monumental wide ramped stair (the cordonata), gradually ascending the hill to the high piazza. It was built to be wide enough for horse riders to ascend the hill without dismounting.

The three remodelled buildings make a trapezoid, approached by "Cordonata." Since no "perfect" forms would work, Michelangelo actually designed an egg-shaped, narrower at one end than at the other. The travertine design set into the paving is perfectly level. May I remind you that I am walking on something that was made around 1540.
