Every morning I burn our fire super hot, heat up the house then let it go out and build another fire in the evening. This morning I had very few coals and it needed a little help, so I put a piece of newspaper under one of the logs and used the striker to light it. The striker is usually placed up on the mantle but I forgot I guess because Jacob and I were playing a quick game of Uno Attack this morning and we heard a loud pop (mini explosion) and then a hissing sound. The fire had melted the striker, expanding the plastic and eventually exploding the fuel case. Luckily the fire place doors were shut and we only had the smell of fuel and not a mini flame thrower.
Side Note: The entire second grade is going ice-skating this morning. Jacob decided that instead of going and just sitting and watching he would stay home with me and I will take him into school after lunch when they come back. He is having pain behind his knee again... we can't wait to get that cast off on Friday.

his cast comes off this week??!! Hooray!
okay, the striker thing is a little scary - no, a lot scary!
SCARY!! I'm glad everyone's ok, that would have scared the crap out of me!!
My heart was going a million miles an hour when I heard the "pop". Actually Pop doesn't even describe the sound, it was much louder and then the HISS! CRAZY. We were really lucky because I usually need to leave the doors cracked a little and that fuel would have hissed right up into the wood stove.
