I am sure you all have had some Christmas Lows. Right now you might even be thinking of some Christmas lows.
Here is my story for you.
Jacob has been doing so good to keep his pants dry at night even when his blood glucose numbers are really high. He was so proud about it that he even told Mamos how good he has been with that and also with putting his tester on the counter and throwing away his used test stripes. (I don't think he is doing well at that a all, but he must think he is improving because he was really proud.)
Christmas Eve night, after playing all day with cousins and the anticipation of Santa Claus coming in the morning, I didn't want that ruined with the chance of an accident. So when Brian finally came home after spending the evening at the airport hanger, I asked if he would be so kind to take the boys to the bathroom one more time. I went in after to test Jacob and he was a bit lower than he should be for nighttime so I went down and got him a cookie that he had left for Santa and had him eat it and then put him back to bed.
Later after went to bed, I asked Brian if I should test Jacob again. I was so tired and was glad when Brian said "No, he will be fine." Charlee still was not going to sleep so I got up again and rocked her then again thought, I should go test Jacob. I didn't want him to be high all night and wet the bed. Then I ended up in bed and fell asleep without testing him. I woke up around 3 am pushed to the very edge of my bed. Jacob had came in and crawled up the middle of our bed and went to sleep. My thought was "good he is fine" I went back to sleep. Around 6 am I woke Jacob up, his feet were right in my back and I was very uncomfortable. I thought I had felt him tremor a bit and I asked if he felt okay. He said yes and then I told him to go to his bed. He got up and walked into his room.
Jacob was going low, we didn't know it. Later I guess he tried to get out of his bed to come and get us but he collapsed on the floor. Aiden came into bed and snuggled around 7:40 and I asked him about the boys and he said they were still in the room. Soon I heard my mom come up stairs and then She said, "Jenny Jacob needs you, he can't move." She had walked by his room and seen him on the floor by his bed and figured he was just anxious to go downstairs. She put Charlee's Jammies in her room and went back into the boys room to sit and talk with Jacob, when she noticed that he wasn't reacting like he should. As she went to pick him up his limbs jolted out of control with short quick movements. I ran to him and could tell with the tenseness in his body that he was extremely low and could not think right. I ran downstairs yelling to Brian that Jacob is having a seizure and ran back upstairs with a apple juice. Brian had a clementine and started feeding it to him while I gave him the juice. He didn't respond very quickly which told me that he had been low for a while and that his body was kicking out every bit of sugar storage it had.
Jacob said...
His head hurt... it is hard to think
He couldn't stand up... or move his arms
He couldn't speak or think to shout
He couldn't hold the juice box so I slowly let him drink from it, while he chewed quickly on the clementines. He was crying and upset while eating, he looked so scared and sick. Later he asked if we could test him for keytones and we told him that he wouldn't be spilling keytones because he was so low. I know he just felt so rotten that he wanted to find out what was wrong and fix it fast.
As he finished the juice box and another glass of OJ he went to stand up and lay in his bed. He collapsed to the floor. His hands and feet still not working right. It took about 30 min for him to recover, and then he was fine. Of course we tested Jacob before they went downstairs to see what Santa brought and he was over 100, but by the time we went upstairs for breakfast he was over 300. I guess we should have thought to dose him for some of his food that he ate to bring him up from his low. But again we got busy doing Christmas and time went by so fast that I didn't realize until he was already high.
So that was our Christmas "LOW"
Just when I think I can put him at the other end of the house, something like this happens and I realize that I need him close to me. Poor Aiden felt bad, he said "I didn't know he couldn't get up." We had a talk with Aiden and I think he will always check on Jacob now. He was sure worried about his brother.

That diabetes thing is SO SCARY! I really feel for Aiden. I've been present for Julie's seizures and extreme lows and anger spells. It is scary when you are young and watching, you can't help, and you don't know what is going to happen. It's good that you talked to Aiden about watching out for it. I had to do the same thing all my life. I knew what to watch for. One funny thing Julie does is that when she starts to go low, her nose goes really cold, like ice. Anyway, I feel for you guys. Way to keep your head and jump to action. Holding it all together for the other kids watching is so important. Don't let them know just how scared you are, they are scared enough as it is.
The only think I can think to say and I am so sorry to Jenny's mom that you will read this, but WHAT A SHITTY DISEASE!
I am so sorry you get to handle these yucky, scary situations. So sorry. You are an amazing mother Jen, keep up the good and never ending work.
Such a scary disease! I still remember right after he was diagnosed and you were at the Dr's office and I wasn't thinking and offered him a sucker...silly me, I'd forgotten. It is scary to think of just how careful you have to be all of the time! I wish you the best! You are an awesome mom and you do a wonderful job keeping as much control as you can possible have on such a crazy situation. Lova ya girl!
Sarah, How in the world do you remember that? I do remember that you were the one that took the first test didn't you? It seems that you came into the room because it kept saying HI.
It's funny the things that we remember...I think I remember it so vividly because I felt like such an ass offering him a sucker!!! (That proves about my SELECTIVE memory...) I just know you are doing a great job with it...don't get discouraged. Love ya!
I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. You would think that if they could find a cure for a useless thing such a chicken pox that they could find one for diabetes and cancer.
