Oh NUTS!

Thank goodness for a boy who has a great memory. For those of you who don't know, Jacob is allergic to nuts. About 5 months ago I made some cookies for our neighbors, I sometimes make turtle cookies and figure that it is okay because I give them all away. WELL I didn't give all of them away because I burnt some. Aiden and Jacob asked me the morning after if they could have one, I had told Jacob the night before that he couldn't because they had nuts in them but this time I forgot and said sure. Luckily he remembered and as soon as he touched it to his lips he could tell it had nuts in it and he didn't eat it. I gave him benedryl and he was itchy but fine.
I decided that I was pretty stupid for taking the chance of my son's health just to make a cookie. So no more turtle anything in my house.

Well last Monday the 17th, Jacob had wrestling practice. Brian took him to practice and forgot his diabetic tester. I finished cleaning up the house and took Jack and Charlee for a drive to get some gas because someone was coming over to look at the house. (oh our house is for sale) Anyway, after I filled up my car Brian called me and asked
"Jacob isn't allergic to Walnuts is he?"

YES!
You can imagine our conversation, we were so scared. Brian rushed him home and gave him some benedryl while I drove over to the pharmacy and refilled our Epi-pen (just in case mine at the house were expired.) I met Brian at the house, Jacob said his tongue felt swollen and his throat hurt. Soon after his eyes began to burn and water. Next came his throat hurting and burning. I got him a cool rag for his eyes and laid him in my bed and let him watch (listen)Sponge Bob (something he has never been able to watch, I was desperate.) It kept his mind busy somewhat. I gave him a little something to eat (luckily I didn't dose him) because soon after he started throwing up. He threw up three times and (skipping a lot) Brian finally drove him down to Primary Children's hospital. When Jacob is sick like this we have no idea how many carbs to dose him for. If he goes low we have a hard time getting his numbers back up because he is throwing up what he eats. You get the idea, anyway.
On the way down to Primary's Jacob fell asleep. He woke up and threw up again. Brian asked Jacob to test himself but he couldn't so he pulled over afraid that he was really low.
After they got to the Hospital and checked in to a ER room. The doctors came in and went over the story
Doctor speaking: "So Jacob went low at wrestling practice and that is when he got into the cliff bar."
Brian: "No. I gave him the cliff bar he didn't get into it."

Brian said he felt awful, they kept blaming Jacob and Brian kept saying no I did it.
So here is the nut story.

At Wrestling Jacob felt really low, Brian didn't have his tester so they walked around looking for some vending machines. They couldn't find any, so they went out to the Cadillac and Brian found a Oatmeal Raisin cliff bar. He broke of the top of it and gave it to Jacob. Jacob ate it and suddenly asked if it had nuts in it. Brian looked at the ingredients and saw Walnuts half way down. He then called me and the rest is history.

Today we went down to Dad and Janis's house to watch the BYU vs. UTAH game. Before we left to go home, Janis offered the kids some cookies for the ride home. When I came out Brian was taking Jacob inside to wash his hands, as he passed me he said the cookies had nuts in them.
Jacob was able to tell and was smart enough to ask before he ate it, he only touched the cookie he didn't eat any.
WHAT A SMART BOY. It must be such a painful allergic reaction. The doctors told Brian that his whole body is allergic to nuts, so as it goes through his body it hurts. So the welt like hives he got on his face he probably continued to get those. Thank goodness for Benedryl.

How scary for you and what a smart little boy you have.
What's this about your house being for sale? Where are you going?
Glad to see you back online. You have been greatly missed!

Wow, that is sooo scary, seriously what a smart boy. That is great he has learned to be in touch with what's happening at such a young age. Can't imagine, nut allergy and diabeties, that's a lot to deal with, for everyone!

Thank you for an invitation! I can't tell you how much it means for me to have you for my new friend. Thank you. We've been in that same situation with forgetting Rowdy's monitor and him feeling low (we don't have the nut thing though-that is sooo hard!). You feel like you are dealing with the complete unknown and you feel so GUILTY! You are amazing!

Poor Jacob! It is awesome that he is so good to check things that way though. It would be so hard to check out everything all the time.
