In a Nut shell.

Well we had a great time in Heber this last weekend. We came back to Heber for our friend Rachel and Matt son's baby blessing. It was so nice to come home.
FYI :The picture below is what happens when your kids get a hold of your camera! While here we were able to go and see our old house and our new house. There have been so many changes made to the old house, it was so fun to be able to see all that they have done in only a couple weeks. While in Heber I sent the boys over to Ruby's to get some frozen burritos out of our deep freeze.(We are temporarily storing the freezer in her garage.) Jacob came back after quite a long time (messing around at Ruby's) and he was crying. I figured he had fallen off the scooter or something and was upset. When he came in the door I greeted him with "what is wrong?" He said that he ate some nuts and that his lips hurt. I could see that he had a bit of a swollen lip and a canker type sore. I asked him what he ate, just then Aiden came back (neither one had the burritos), Aiden said "Jacob ate a peanut." Turning to Jacob I said Jacob you are not allergic to peanuts, he said I know but my lip hurts. I looked at his lip again and went to get some benedryl. Then Aiden showed me the peanut... It wasn't a peanut it was a pistachio nut. Luckily it was still in a shell and he couldn't bite it so he spit it right back out. I gave him some Benedryl and he seemed to be fine. I guess Jacob is allergic to the nut shells too.

FYI: The cashew is in the cashew botanical family along with mango and pistachio. There has been some research to show a relationship between a cashew allergy and a severe reaction to poison ivy.
Jacob is severely allergic to Cashews he reacted on his tests at a "extremely dangerous" level. I have no idea about poison ivy, do we even have poison ivy around here, what does it look like? Also, I began to think about Bryce and his mango allergy... Sharece be careful with Jason.

An almond is actually in the plum family along with apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, plum and the prune plum, yet it is considered a tree nut by most allergists. It is definitely possible to be allergic to almond, yet be able to tolerate peaches or the other foods in the botanical family. Jacob is not allergic to Almonds and loves all of the above fruit mentioned.

The pecan is in the walnut botanical family along with the butternut, hickory nut and black and English walnut. Jacob is allergic to these and our ER visit at Primary Children's this last fall is proof of that.

Story: Jacob had a serious low while at wrestling practice last fall. Brian went to the car to find him something to eat. Brian came back with a oatmeal raisin cliff bar. Jacob, who gets extremely hungry when he is low, had half of it eaten before Brian could even unwrap it. Jacob soon told Brian that his throat and his tongue felt funny. I happened to be at the pharmacy so I picked up a epi-pen Jr just in case and headed home. Brian had given Jacob Benedryl when I got home, but Jacob's face was still swollen, his voice was different and his breathing was very labored. We gave him a double dose of Benedryl and then later he started to get symptomatic again and we gave him another dose. After speaking to our pediatrician it was determined that we needed to go down to Primary Children's with Jacob. Brian felt so bad, he drove him down. Jacob got sick on the way down and he also had another low. At Primary's they gave him another dose of Benedryl and checked him out, they were able to come home that night.

I am so very thankful that he instantly can tell and that he spits whatever out of his mouth. We need to be more careful about what he eats, it truely scares me. We have been extremely fortunate, please remember about us and no nuts for us!

You'll find two bags of burritos...actually 1 and 1/4 bags and a tub of Ice Cream over at Gram's house. I made my own visit to Rubys last week. :)

Thanks for the advise Jen! While I was visiting my sister one of the little cousins left his pb gronola bar on the ground. Jason found it but I don't think he swallowed any. He put some in his mouth then spit it out but I sure watched him close. Allergies are scary!
