Around 1 pm I received a call from the school. I assumed it would be Jacob, instead I heard the secretary, "Jacob's has been hurt. He fell off the slide and hurt his leg." I had just hung up the phone with my sister in law Julie when the call from the school came in. This was during his lunch recess and I assumed the call would be Jacob feeling low and needing some help with his diabetes. For "Jacob Rowser" week I didn't want him to take anything to school diabetes related... I wanted to show the kids that he likes the same things and does the same activities as they do. He doesn't have many friends and often behaves silly to get the kids to laugh so he feels like he has friends. I thought, okay this year he has been water skiing, rock climbing, sledding, swimming, boating, hiking, biking, flying, fishing, and many other cool things. I wanted to kind of show him off a little bit. Not needles, pumps, testers, and medicine.
Now I found myself rushing the kids to get into the car. I don't know why I was so quick, usually it takes me a bit to get out of the house. Luckily I hadn't laid Charlee down for a nap so I was able to get the boys to get their shoes on and off we went. When I arrived at the school he had his right foot propped up on a chair. As I walked in he looked up at me and there were a few tears in his eyes, but mostly (looking back) shock and pain. The secretary mentioned that it was the left leg that is dangling, not the leg up on the chair. She said they had tried to take off the boot but he would scream that it hurt. I asked Jacob if I could take a look? He really didn't respond, I lifted his foot up causing his leg to move, straightening at his knee. He screamed in pain... we talked about where the pain was. It seemed he couldn't straighten his leg so I wondered if it could be his knee. He said no and he pointed to his shin. At this point I decided to un-tuck his pants from his "tall"(thank goodness) snow boots. As I carefully pulled at his jeans he again screamed out in pain. After carefully lifting up his pants I peeked down into the boot where he said the pain was coming from. Nothing, not even red, the secretary suggested we take off the boot. I asked Jacob if he had pain in his ankle and he said "it is all down the front of my leg." I told him I would go get his backpack and tester and we would go to the doctor. When I came back we tried to see if I could take off his boot and he was in too much pain. Even touching his boot made him scream.I picked him up as carefully as I could and walked to the car. I put him in the front seat and he slumped over still in pain. I got into the car and called Dr. Dave's office... no luck they were at Lunch. So I called Dr. Bergs Office.... Lunch. I didn't know if I should wait until they were back from lunch or if I should take him to the ER. I called Rachel and she mentioned the urgent care, I didn't know about that so I decided to take him there. Come to find out that is only available after hours, but as I walked in Dr. Bergs nurse was coming out of the office. She asked me what was going on and I told her, she said that they could see him and we sat him down in the waiting room.
As most of you know... Jacob had a spiral fracture of his left tibia. Thanks to Rachel and Jones for coming and switching me cars and taking my kids. "Jacob Rowser" week at school and Jacob will be home from school the rest of the week and Monday is a holiday, returning "hopefully" on Tuesday.
- Nurse made me help take the boot off, NOT FUN!
- x-ray tech was so careful with him, she knew he was in a lot of pain
- I had the nurse give him a shot of pain meds before they splinted it
- He was in so much pain even with the pain meds while they wrapped around the splint.
- I can't find crutches anywhere for him. The smallest I can find only go to 4'6"
- left kids in the car watching a movie until I called Rachel to come and get them
- Pain meds at pharmacy... not strong enough
- didn't sleep for two, almost three days straight because of pain
- Diabetes numbers HIGH HIGH HIGH, because of the pain
- Couldn't move the bed, couldn't move him, he didn't move. I took him potty right when we got home and it was as if I was killing him. HE IS IN SO MUCH PAIN! Upped the pain meds from 1 tsp to 3 tsp. Still in pain
- Splint for a week, he will get the cast on Friday
Jacob broke his leg today... Aiden just threw up... Brian is in Beautiful St. Barts!
